The History And Development Of The Pocket Watch

The pocket watch was a device that was very rich in the 16th century and only the high class could possess..In the 16th century clocks were produced using springs instead of weights, signifying the transfer from clocks to watches. These old pocket watches were the first timepieces that could be owned by the public. Owning a pocket watch signified the status, wealth and power of an individual.

The 17th century made pocket watches even more desirable with a new look to the figure. The watch had changed from its original box-like look to a new rounded and slimmer case. Craftsmen began working ever so hard to create designs on every pocket watch made.

In 1675 some watchmakers discovered the importance of a spiral spring. By attaching the spiral spring to the balance, the accuracy of the pocket watch increased greatly. It was now possible to tell time by the minute as oppose to being off by a few hours. With this new discovery, the minute hand was born on the pocket watch. Baby Boy BeddingPittsburgh Steelers BeddingPersonalized Gifts

The 18th century saw added improvement to the pocket watchwith further development and more added features to drive up the price. Oil had become a popular method to lubricate and smoothen the movement of the hands of the watch. Jewels had begun to be used for the bearings in watches while diamonds were used on the high priced watches. This shot the cost up to again give the rich the power to show their wealth and status.

In the middle of the 18th century another hand was introduced to show the increased precision in time. It was only a matter of time that a third hand would be added seeing that we were aware of time down to the second now. This allowed people to know the exact time of day it was through there pocket watch. Blaine electricianKitchen countertops Fort Myers

The 19th century brought several famous pocket watch makers that increased the value of the watch. Having multiple watchmakers added the competition to the quality of watch they sold, including how much they sold their watches for. The quality of watches sold was now better than ever with much more reasonable prices  The 19th century signified the peak of the old pocket watch.

As time passed further inventions were taking place and the invention of the wristwatch soon took the place of the pocket watch. While some old pocket watches are still around today, the wristwatch is the dominant choice of time now. Today old pocket watches are more of an antique collection than anything. While the pocket watchhas served as a useful tool throughout the years, it now rests as solely a collection item that helped lead to the development of the wristwatch. Sports Bar StoolsCarlos Santana Hat

The five tips :How to appraising and buying antique watches

1.The antique watch might have pictures on the web. You can have a close look at these pictures before ordering this watch. Consider the history attached to the watch. The watch might have been worn in a James Bond movie. The watch might be from the World War II era. You should find out the quality of the watch, the name of the manufacturer, the accuracy in time keeping, and the functions included in the watch. The longevity and reliability of the watch has to be evaluated before deciding to go ahead with paying huge sums for the watch.

2.    Antique watches might have a kind of movement, materials used to make the watches might be unique, and the design associated with the antique watch is also very distinctive of the era. These factors also require some amounts of value and will demand a price. The watches might be the last ones before the design or shape has changed. These watches might be automatic or mechanical as was designed by designer.Leather BeltWestern Clothing

3.    The number of these antique watches will also determine the price of the watch. There might be huge number of these antique watches moving around in the market when the price will be lower. The watch that was worn on a journey around the world, the watch that was used to climb Mount Everest, or the watch worn to space will have a novelty value attached to them. These antique watches will require huge amounts of investment if you want to decorate your wrist with them.

4.    The funky value, popularity among the collectors, and hence the demand for the watch is what is driving the price of these antique watches. These watches are priced as per the brand name. Rolex antique watches are quite popular and their price is quite huge. Antique watches from brands like Breitling, Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, and IWC will be highly priced as there is the novelty value of the brand. You can ask the seller for a certification of authentication and this will be very useful.

5.    The complexity of the watch and maybe a change in the mechanism of making the watch also determine the price of the antique watch. Survey of the watch and evaluation of the price of the antique watch will help you in concluding which watch you should buy. The price of the watch will also be ascertained and then you will be able to order the watch online or buy the antique watch from a watch store. The watches are there for you to evaluate, buy, and keep as antique pieces.

Cuckoo Clocks Made Extinct From The Black Forest

Cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest have been around since the mid-1700s. Prior to that time, sundials and hourglasses were the usual way to keep time. Cuckoo Clocks are a specialty of the black forest region in Germany. All ages can and will enjoy the sound of a Cuckoo Clock. Cuckoo clocks haven’t changed much in how they work over the centuries. All have a swinging pendulum that counts seconds and all have pipes that signal the hour in the form of the common cuckoo bird call.

Cuckoo clocks have been made in Germany since 1750, when Franz Anton Ketterer of the Black Forest villiage of Schonwald managed to reproduce the cuckoo bird’s song with the clever use of bellows producing two different notes. In the following century, the Black Forest cuckoo clock industry developed rapidly. Cuckoo clocks are almost always mechanical weight driven movement; a very few are spring driven.

The weights are made of cast iron in a pine cone shape. Cuckoo Clocks are available in different styles with different movements. Some cuckoo clock designs are quite common – like the Dear Head Top – but over the time many different colors, styles and basic characteristics find their way to the hearts of the customer.

Black Forest cuckoo clocks are definitely among the most popular of all clocks. For centuries, these elegant and sometimes whimsical cuckoo clocks have been one of the most popularly exported productions in Germany. Black forest background music. Celebrity Watch on Satellite TV

Summer is the time the celebrities come out to play (not like they are not out all year long), what with warmer temperatures, concerts tours and festivals around the world. As more and more celebrities get their own reality shows and the gossip bloggers take over all media and move to satellite TV, too, pay attention to where and what your favorite celebrity couples or families are doing on channels like VH1, E! or MTV. The following are some fo the most popular television shows that you can catch year round to see what kind of havoc your favorite celebrity is causing this week.

E! True Hollywood Story: Each week a celebrity family, couple or solo is selected and is profiled on this popular weekly series. Now that E! is a high definition television channel, you can watch Lindsay Lohan’s train wreck life play out in true colors. Catch up on her child star and darling past as she partied her way into bad girl history and violated her DUI, sending her back to jail within the next few weeks.
The Soup on E!: The Soup is great not only because it is hosted by NBC’s lovable Community star, Joel McHale, but because it rounds up all the best gossip from each week and does a great job at mocking the gossip mongers by satirizing everything that happened. Satellite TV now offers this channel in Spanish, too, so everyone can enjoy watching your celebrity melodramas and reality shows rounded up in the most hysterical way possible.
MTV Video Music Awards and Movie Awards: These award shows, though not really holding much street cred next to the Oscars and Grammys, are still entertaining because you never know who will turn up, who will fight who and what kind of drama the usually overly rambunctious and obnoxious hosts will stir up. It receives tons of unwarranted attention each year, so pay attention to Hollywood’s cheesy glitz and glamour on MTV’s high definition channel.
VH1′s Reality Series: VH1 and MTV invented poor reality television, but VH1 really brought it to the next level with stars like Bret Michaels, The Pick Up Artists, Tila Tequila and other D-listers trying to bring their star status up to the A-game. Sadly, most of these stars will end up eventually on E!’s or VH1′s Celebrity Rehab shows instead of walking the red carpet with an Emmy in hand.
The Bachelor Series: This show, in high definition and basic cable, has been reincarnated so many times with poor lonely and aspiring men and women looking for “love,” which is actually code for their 15 minutes of fame. Give it to them and tune into ABC during the summer to see bikinis, make out sessions and more while they look for their one true love. Note: about 8 of 10 setups from the Bachelor series have ended in failure.

Tips for Evaluating Vintage Or Antique Watches

Antique watches have their unique, beautiful appeal and timeless classic aesthetic. The problem, however, is that not all of these old timepieces can be considered valuable in the monetary sense. The usual mentality is to think that all antiques are automatically expensive. This isn’t true. Not all antique timepieces can be considered valuable, and they may not even be worth your time. Old watches, in some cases, are really just old and not valuable at all. That’s a really unfortunate turn of events, especially if you’re a collector. Maybe your watch is worth a lot more in sentiment than in money.

But how should one go about evaluating vintage watches? Contrary to popular belief, this type of evaluation cannot be carried out by an untrained eye. You need knowledge, training, and experience in order to properly establish how much a particular piece is worth.

There are a lot of ways to do this evaluation, and you can then identify whether or not this is something you want added to your collection. Since you’re not a professional, your evaluation may not be perfect, but if you have a proper set of measures you’ll be able to decide if the timepiece is valuable to you.

You should remember, however, that not all collectors maintain the same standards. There are different factors for different collectors, which is why the process of evaluation can be really difficult. There are collectors who focus on the manufacturer; some take note of rare features, or even the condition of the watch. Regardless of the main factor that a particular collector zeroes in on, there really are some factors that can help you identify how much a vintage watch is potentially worth.

First, look at the maker and the model. This is a very important key step, because you want to gather as much information about your item before anything else. Think of cars, for example. When evaluating cars, you often begin by picking up information regarding the brand, the year of manufacture, the reason for selling, and more. In order to evaluate your vintage watch, you will need to gain information like the model, the grade, and the size, among others.

Second, try to find out how old your vintage watch is. It’s sort of a known practice that the older your item is, the more valuable it becomes. This is why identifying the age of your watch is important. There are brand who make things easier. They already have the year of manufacture included in the serial number of the watch. Other brands, unfortunately, don’t give you this kind of information. What to do then? Try to note the model and see when that specific model became available. This won’t give you an exact date, but it should be helpful at least.

Third, look for rarity in your watch. Something that is rare, quite obviously, is something that is expensive and valuable. Having something that others don’t elevates your collection. Plus, it makes the item a lot more valuable. You become one of the “special”, in a way. To identify whether or not a specific vintage watch rare, there are two ways to prove this. First, identify the model and see if it’s a limited edition one. Second, look for rare features. Both give the vibe that you are the owner of something really rare.

Fourth, inspect the condition. If it no longer works, it’s less valuable, obviously. In some cases, the vintage watch does work, but it does so poorly. These damages definitely bring down the price of the watch. Whether you’re a collector or seller, realise that the watch’s condition is highly important. Remember to inspect the external and internal parts. The external damages are easy to see, but internal ones can be really difficult.

Lastly, the opinion of professionals should settle things much more easily. If you let a professional take a look, your vintage watch will be easily evaluated and understood.

Collecting Antique Pocket Watches

The Egyptian’s sundial was the first device that measures time and it was invented approximately in 1300 B.C.  The first mobile clock however only came around the 1500’s.  The first mechanical clocks were huge and heavy that these were usually placed in churches.  Henry De Vick had even invented a 500-pound clock for the royal palace still in the 1500’s.  People had waited for years for a portable clock to be invested and it was Peter Helein, a German locksmith, who came up with the first recorded steel watch.  The known watchmakers of that era were typically blacksmiths and locksmiths who were skilled with steel and metal fabrication.

Although widely disputed, Peter Henlein was also credited for the invention of a spring technology that paved way for clocks to be wound to move its hand.  Other experts believe that the spring technology was already existent even before the 1500’s but perhaps it was Henlein who found a way of using it with clocks.  He then created the first portable watch around 1504 to 1508 which looks like a circular powder case.  It was then called the “Taschenuhr”.  However, the time provided from this piece was not accurate due to the inconsistency in the wounding of the spring.

It was only until 1675 when watchmakers realized how a spiral spring that is attached to the balance can accurately reflect time within minutes instead of being an approximate of an hour.  Subsequently, the minute hand was added onto the device until other improvements were gradually incorporated into the pocket watch.  Around the 1700’s, English watchmakers started to create protective casings for the timekeeping device.  They used silver and gold for the cases and usually mark these to denote who manufactured the pieces.  Today, it would really be hard to find pocket watches made before 1700.

Nonetheless, vintage pocket watch collectors can find pieces from the mid 1700 to the late 1800’s.  The first mass-produced pocket watches were made by the company called the Waltham.  It was found by three men in 1850 namely Davis, Dennison, and Howard.  They encountered major problems in the production of the watches that the first pocket watch they have produced was only sold until 1853.  Their first few watches were marked “Warren Boston” and “Samuel Curtis”.

Just a few months after the first few watches were sold; the company was then renamed to the Boston Watch Company.  The watches they had fabricated after were marked “C.T.

Parker”, “Dennison, Howard & Davis”, and “P.S. Bartlett”.  But the company was later sold in 1857 due to some financial troubles and it was once again renamed.  This time the company was known as the Appleton, Tracy & Co.  Around 10,000 watches were manufactured by the company with serial numbers from 4001 to 14,000.

Cuckoo Clock Repair

Article by Timothy Shaw

Has anyone ever told you that if you have cuckoo clock repair work to be done, it is not worth your time? So many people will say it is easier to get a new cuckoo clock than to just repair an old one. Depending on what needs to be repaired on a cuckoo clock, it may be easier to get a new clock. Often times, its not “just a clock” when talking about cuckoo clocks. There can be much sentimental value for a person that owns a cuckoo clock. It could be handed down to you from a grandparent. Or just one you bought when you were on vacation that is irreplaceable.

With the internet now days, it is becoming easier to find the parts needed to repair a cuckoo clock. There are many clock shops that are willing to repair cuckoo clocks. These shops carry everything needed for repairing cuckoo clocks from the pendulum to the cuckoo itself. These shops also offer videos on repairing cuckoo clocks. Just remember, if you do order the repair parts, make sure they are the exact parts you need. So if you do want to repair your cuckoo clock, that is an option, just a little time consuming.

Here are a few things to consider when having someone else repair your cuckoo clock. If you live in a small town, do you want to take the chance of sending your clock through the mail to a clock repair shop? If your cuckoo clock has sentimental value, do you want to put it in the hands of the mail carrier? Just because you have written on the box “handle with care” doesn’t mean proper care is always taken. Your cuckoo clock could be in worse condition when it returns to you than the day you had sent it, which requires more repairing or even being unrepairable. How much will it cost to send your cuckoo clock off for repairs? Shipping your cuckoo clock to the repair shop plus the parts and service and then the shipping back to you can add up. Is there a clock repair shop in your area you can take your cuckoo clock to? Are you able to pack up you clock in a box and drive it down to the clock repair shop? If so, this may be the way you want to go. Someone specializing in cuckoo clock repair has the knowledge and expertise needed for fixing your special clock. Other questions to ask yourself is, what needs to be repaired on your cuckoo clock? Is it something that is easy to repair? Do you have to take the cuckoo clock apart to get to the inside movements? How easy will it be to put your clock back together? These are all questions that you need to ask yourself. You are the only one that can answer them as well. Cuckoo clocks are not just another clock that you have in your home. The cuckoo clock you own means something to you and is hard to replace. When you encounter a problem with your cuckoo clock, you don’t just throw it away and start looking for a new one. You are throwing memories away when throwing your cuckoo clock away.

In conclusion, cuckoo clocks can be repaired at home or sent to a clock repair shop. It all depends on how well you are with your hands. Shipping your cuckoo clock through the mail takes the chance of getting broke or possibly even lost. That may not be a chance you want to take if your cuckoo clock has sentimental value. A cuckoo clock with sentimental value is irreplaceable. The best thing to do is, figure out what the problem is with your cuckoo clock and do a little research. Figure out the complete cost of shipping and repairs if you do want to send off your cuckoo clock. Look into ordering the parts needed to repair your clock. Talk to friends and family, maybe they know how to repair a cuckoo clock and would be willing to fix it for you for a small fee or even free of charge.

A Brief History Of Pocket Watches

Everything has its beginning. And if you believe that time starts from somewhere, also consider the beginning of time measurements.

Early people have devised a system to tell the exact date. But a device that exactly tells the precise time comes much later. Water clocks, sundials, and candle clocks are the earliest instruments that somehow manage to tell time but accuracy is far from achievable.

In the 13th century, weight-driven clocks were developed. It used gears while hour hand was already used while the minute hand was an indication of luxury and wealth. The weight-driven clocks were publicly displayed on church towers, city halls, and monasteries.

In the 16th century, clocks were produced using spring instead of weight. The portable clocks or the pocket watches were the first timepieces that the public can own. During this time, the only persons who can own them were the rich and owning one signified the status, authority, and wealth of the person. Often, portable watches were placed on the wall of the house. The term “portable” though did not mean it could be carried on your pocket. The term changed its meaning some years later.

The first transportable watches or pocket watches was used also in the 16th century. This time, clocks no longer had to stay at one place. Pocket watches can already be worn around the neck or carried on a pocket. The same era also brought revolution to the development of pocket watches. Mechanisms were introduced to bring time-telling precision. Some packet watches even had an alarm.

The entry of the 17th century made pocket watched even more desirable. The box-like image was removed and was replaced by more rounded and slimmer cases. Clockmakers also became instant artists as they infuse designs and craftsmanship to every pocket watch the made.

When Christian Huygens discovered the law of pendulum, which for your information was different from Galileo’s, clock had yet again moved one step further. The law proved to be very helpful in the development of pocket watches.

In the 18th century, pocket watches continued to evolve. This time, jewels were used as bearings. Diamonds became part of some pocket watches that boosted the price of a single pocket watch to the ceiling. Oil was also became part of pocket watches during this period. This was to lubricate and smoothen the movement of the watch’s hands. In the second half of the 18th century, pocket watches were produced with three hands. Contrary to the inclusion of the minute hand during the 16th century, second hand made sense since accuracy in telling time was far better.

In the 19th century came the glory days of the packet watches. This era brought the several watchmakers into the picture. Names such as LeCoultre & Cie, Ulysse Nardin, Minerva, Heuer, IWC, and many others were established in this period. The quality of pocket watches became better than ever.

By the turn of the 20th century, certificates were issued to those watchmakers that created precise watches. Unlike the previous years, issuance of certificate became more of a requirement than luxury.

And as the years gone by, the popularity of pocket watches diminished as wristwatches became more popular.

Although pocket watches are not so much used today, it has served as one of the important instruments for several centuries.

History of The Clock

The term “clock” came into use in the 14th century and its meaning was not the one we know today. It meant “bell” or “alarm.”

There is no exact date as to the invention of the first timekeeping device. Timekeeping dates back five to six thousand years ago with the civilization inhabiting the Middle East and North Africa. The Egyptians in 3500 B.C. had a way of keeping time in the form of obelisks. These were slender, four-sided, tapered monuments that cast shadows on the sand and denoted the passing of time.

Sundials and the Egyptians

Around the same time, the sundial also came into use. This consisted of a round plate with a slanted protrusion coming from its center. As the sun moved, the shadow cast onto the dial marked the time. In 1500 B.C. the Egyptians were even able to create the first portable sundial, what could be called the grandfather to the watches of today. Sundials tell sun time, while our current clocks keep mean solar time.

First Alarm Clock and Water Clock

The first alarm clock dates back to ancient times. Simple in design, it consisted of a candle with lines inscribed into it denoting the passing hours. To “set” the alarm, a nail was pushed into the wax at the appropriate hour. When the candle burned down to the nail, the nail fell into a tin pan at its base, thus awakening the sleeper.

Water clock is another ancient civilization invention. They worked by dripping water into a container, which slowly raised a float that was kept in the container, which in turn carried a pointer to note the hours. The oldest known water clock was found in the tomb of Amenhotep I.

First Mechanical Clock

The first mechanical clock with escapements appeared in 1285. Escapement is a mechanism that ticks in a steady rhythm and moves the gears forward in a series of equal jumps. The first public clock to strike the hour was in Milan in about A.D. 1335. Still these clocks had only one hand, so it was not that accurate.

16th Century Improvements

In 1510 Peter Henlien of Nuremberg, Germany came up with the invention with his creation of the spring-powered clock. While this was a more accurate device, there was a slowing down when the “mainspring” unwound.

In 1525, Jacob Zech of Prague improved it by using a “Spiral pulley” therefore equalizing the pull of the spring. Despite improvement, clock still operated only with an hour hand.

In 1577, Jost Burgi invented the first clock with a minute hand but it was in 1656, with the invention of the pendulum-regulated clock, that a more practical minute hand came about.

In 1580, with the ingenuity of Galileo Galilei, the first pendulum was produced. He found that successive beats of a pendulum always took place in the same amount of time. He and his son, Vincenzo, began to make drawings to find a suitable design. Unfortunately, Galileo died during the construction of the instrument but his son was able to produce a model in 1649.

Christiaan Huygens perfected Galileo’s concept by inventing the first weight-driven clock through the use of a pendulum, although it was still only an hour hand.

17th to 19th Century

In 1680, the minute hand was finally conceived, to be followed by the second hand few years.

In 1889, Siegmund Riefler built a pendulum clock with accuracy within one hundredth of a second.

Clocks of the 20th Century, and Beyond

In 1921, W.H. Shortt invented the double pendulum which operated with one master and one slave pendulum. It was accurate to a few milliseconds a day.

In the 1930s and 1940s, pendulum clock started to be replaced by quartz clocks which are still used today, although the atomic clock precision has surpassed it.
